I've had to write about myself dozens of times, for everything from college applications to updating social media. I've always hated it. The ever-dreaded "What's an interesting fact about yourself?" I'm sorry, but who's facts are ever good anyway? Definitely not mine.

What I've realized is that when I do have to talk about myself in this way, it's always a fraction of the truth. I end up describing who I want them to see. A Dedicated Student. An Organized Leader. A Picture-Perfect 21-Year-Old. Never the Real Kathryn.

Someone who loves wine and binging books every night if she could. Who prefers her own company to that of others. Makes playlists for book characters. Would absolutely have pasta every night.

We take so much time and care to get to know everyone around us, following and keeping tabs through the ever-present social media. We don't pencil in time to know ourselves. We're constantly changing (I might even be ready to admit I've learned to like pickles).

I knew what I loved to do as a kid but somewhere between the playground and the diploma I forgot. Or at least learned to re-prioritize what society thought I should care about.

This is the first time, maybe ever, that I have the time to get to know myself again. To make mistakes and learn. To not have to answer to a job, or school, or extracurriculars that I don't really think I enjoyed anyway.

Time to be selfish in the best way possible.
